Sometimes you’re making mistakes with your makeup, and you have absolutely no idea. Don’t worry, though, you’re not alone. Everyone makes mistakes, even experienced makeup users. Small errors that you make can greatly affect the overall look, how long your makeup lasts and the finish of the makeup.
This blog acts as a practical but non-judgmental guide in the aims of identifying and fixing small mistakes that many people make every day, to help you to make a big difference.
- Skipping skin prep
One of the biggest mistakes that people make before applying their makeup is not prepping their skin. Unprepared skin can lead to foundation and concealer application being patchy and peeling off, leading to a look that barely lasts hours.
Fix- To fix this, ensure that you properly clean your skin with perfume-free cleansers to make sure that there is no oil and dirt that can affect the application. Also, using a rich moisturiser means that your skin is hydrated, which can prolong wear and stop skin from drying and peeling. Skin primer is also an extra way to ensure that makeup lasts all day, whilst blurring pores.
- Incorrect blush placement
Many people fall into the trap of placing blush in the centre of their cheeks in a round motion, as this is the traditional way of applying it. However, placing blush in this way can drag the face down and even make you look older. Whether it’s cream blush or powder blush, placement is key, and the explosion of popularity in the past few years has created multiple new techniques that help to lift and amplify features.
Fix- An easy fix to this problem is to apply blush in an upwards motion on the highest parts of your cheeks and then blend into the hairline. You can also place blush on the tip of your nose for an extra bit of lift and colour on your face.
- Ignoring brow or overdoing them
Eyebrows are a strong feature on most people’s faces and can help to shape the face, or if done incorrectly, can overpower the face. When you ignore your brows, you miss out on an opportunity to lift or add structure to your face and on the opposite end, some people tend to overfill and enlarge their brows, meaning that they become the dominating feature of their face. Either way, this can damage a makeup look.
Fix- Less is more! Use light strokes and choose a shade close to your natural brow or hair colour. Even ask a friend if you think that you struggle with brow blindness!
- Overlining lips too much
Heavy overlining can look obvious and, in some cases, unclassy. Your makeup look can be greatly affected by your lip choices, sometimes its best to be more understated when it comes to lips. Even a simple lip gloss that accentuates your natural lip colour can be enough, or even a simple overline and a lip balm.
Fix- Slightly enhance the cupid’s bow and the centre of the lips for a natural effect, and top off with a clear gloss.
