First Methodist Church to open clothing closet next weekend

First Methodist Church will open up a clothing closet next weekend.

The closet is full of donated clothes of all sizes for people of all ages.

Judy Wiggins, a member of the church’s outreach committee, said the church has been (and will continue) collecting items to give to people who need them.

Wiggins said the First Methodist Church, which is located at 1001 W. 7th St., typically does a coat drive called “Operation Serve” in the winter. This outreach project is an extension of that. That’s what the church wants to do – serve the community.

The clothing closet will be open the second Saturday of every month starting Feb. 13. This month the church will also experiment with a last-Thursday-of-the-month open date (Feb. 25). If the Thursday date goes well, it may become a regular day of operation for the clothing closet.

Those interested can visit the church from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on Feb. 13 and from 2-6 p.m. on Feb. 25 to “shop.”

They hope to continue the clothing closet as long as there’s a need (and the church is stocked with supplies).

Those interested can also drop off clothing donations Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Wiggins said volunteers sort through the clothes and wash them before putting them out.

Wiggins noted that the church also operates a food pantry. Those who need food can visit and pick up sacks of groceries almost any time.

“We won’t ask any questions,” she said.

Supplies are available on a first come, first served basis. Masks are required.
