Big, fluffy hair is back and we’re here for it. On the other hand, it can take a hot minute to stop associating *fluff* with *frizz*, fly-aways and all things damaged strands, so let’s kick off with some positive ‘90s visuals. Think: Cindy Crawford. Cher from ‘Clueless’. Mariah Carey.

Better? Great, because Jessica Hau, part of our Rush Creative Workshop Team, has her hairdryer at the ready, to teach us how to get fluffy hair and master the retro trend.

A note before we get started: rollers are our favourite tool for this blowdry and hairspray is our best friend. The fluffier the better, this ‘do only improves day by day.

Step 1

Wash and condition your hair as usual, then towel-dry and detangle any knots with a wide-tooth comb. If you’re prone to frizz, work a styling cream through your tresses, and whatever the weather, be sure to spritz on a heat protectant before you bring out the hairdryer.

Step 2

Blowdry your first section of hair, using the concentrator nozzle on your hairdryer and a large, round bristle brush. Move the hair through your brush, up and away from the roots as you dry, to encourage as much volume as possible.

Step 3

Gather the section of hair, spray a good volumiser on the roots, place a large roller at the end of the hair and roll it towards your head. If it feels loose when you’re done, secure your roller in place against your scalp, with a mini claw clip. Repeat steps one and two for the rest of your hair, ensuring you don’t overload the rollers with too many strands.

Step 4

Get on with your life! Take care of business! If you’re getting ready for a big night out, now is a good time to experiment with your makeup, prepare a nice pasta dish to soak up the martinis, or iron your dress – the longer you can leave your rollers in, the more impressive your fluffy hair will be!

Step 5

Remove your rollers one by one and brush through each section of hair, before using your hands to zhuzh up the roots. Finish with a blast of hairspray to keep your fluffy hair perfectly poised, and make sure to turn your head upside down and spray the under layers too.

Step 6

Make your fluffy ‘do last longer! Before you go to bed, twist and roll your locks into a bun or two buns, secure with grips or a scrunchie, et voilà! Let it down the next day and you will still have lovely bouncy curls to live your best Cindy Crawford life.
