How To Perfect The Perfect Make-Up Base

How To Perfect The Perfect Make-Up Base

Make-up is a difficult skill to master. From eyeliner to lipstick thers a variety of skills that you need to perfect your makeup routine. However, nothing is harder to master than the perfect base.

The perfect base can make a make-up routine as a smooth and flawless base can make or break a routine. There is not much that can go wrong from cracking to colour matching, making it one of the most complex steps in a routine. If done right, you can be left with glowing skin all day that everyone mistakes for your natural skin, and you can walk out the door without any other steps.

So if you want to perfect your make-up base so that your make-up looks like a professional has done it, here are the steps that you should take.

Step 1: Start with the base

Starting with a good base is the key to the perfect make-up base. This means ensuring that your skin is fully moisturised before applying anything. For most, this consists of clean skin, which is attributed to a soothing cleaner, hyaluronic acid and a rich moisturiser. Ensuring that the skin is clean and hydrated reduces the chance of flaking, dry patches and uneven texture, which can distort foundation and make for poor wear throughout the day.

Step 2: Prep for wear

Preparing for long-term wear is a significant factor in creating the perfect base. Many fall into the trap of focusing on the short-term wear, which looks good for an hour, but cracks and rubs off throughout the day. This is where an effective face primer comes in. Choosing a primer that works for your skin type can help your base to not only last throughout the day, but to melt into your skin, for a no-makeup makeup look. Where those with dryer skin may opt for a nourishing cream primer, others with oily or combination skin may choose a grippy gel primer to help control oil production.

Step 3: The right foundation

Choosing the right foundation can make or break your routine. A foundation that is badly matched or for the wrong texture for your skin type can create a bad base. Through swatching a foundation on your neck, you can achieve the best colour match as well as ensure that the foundation matches your undertones. This avoids the line on the jawline, which can ruin a makeup look.

In addition, the coverage of a foundation is a significant part of choosing the right foundation. If a foundation is too full, it increases the chance of flaking and peeling throughout the day, all whilst looking cakey, which can enhance skin texture. Opting for a low or medium coverage foundation, depending on your preference, allows you to build up coverage whilst maintaining a skin-like look.

Pair this with a lighter coloured concealer on problem areas or to cover under-eye bags, to create a seamless base that lasts all day and add a lip gloss to finish the look.
