How To Stop being A Hypebeast

Hypebeasts — The Other Side of Streetwear - The Observer

Hypebeast is a word that has so many negative connotations to it, and to be honest, you can see why in some parts. Paying over the odds for the full tracksuit that you are only buying because of the demand for the product. A hypebeast is anyone who absolutely must have the latest garms from the biggest or most trending brands at that time. Many people want items just for the sake of it being limited edition, but this can quickly empty your bank balance after even one purchase.

This is always going to happen as it’s human nature, but people can change once they realise that the hypebeast culture is something that should be calmed down. Once they have decided this, life can get easier. This isn’t to say you can’t buy the odd limited edition pair of treds, but it doesn’t have to be every piece of clothing or accessory that you have. In this article, we will go through some simple tips on how to stop being a hypebeast.

Stop Matching Your Clothes

The first thing that one should realise is that matching your trainers and clothing all the time. This just looks really tacky and it has no contrast. Instead, you can match colours, but add new textures that contrast for a more subtle yet smart approach.

Embrace Simple Footwear

When it comes to footwear, there is much more than the bulkiest and boldest trainer available. Instead, opt for other casual footwear pieces such as chukka boots or a pair of loafers. Streetwear for men doesn’t have to be bold, it can be simple and effective. The trick to this is using them as casual footwear rather than formal. This is a true and timeless tip of fashion. Alternatively, you could opt for a single pair of good quality trainers that are versatile with outfits such as a pair of Alexander McQueens.

Take Things Down A Notch

A key rule in fashion is to put everything on that you want, look in the mirror and then you should take one thing off. This is certainly a rule that many more people should be following. Nothing screams “I’m trying too hard” like the person with a lot of accessories and bold clothing head to toe. You can still wear a cap and necklace but maybe think twice about anything extra.

Don’t Be A Brand Stan

It’s great having branded clothing, it makes your feel more confident and the quality is great, but this doesn’t have to be overkill and have everything branded. One thing that is too much is dressing head to toe in the same brand, instead, mix it up with different brands and non-branded clothing. Dressing head to toe isn’t stylish, it is in fact free advertising for these brands. Not everything has to be limited edition.

Develop Your Own Style

Don’t let social media and blogs influence the way you dress, you are your own person. If you have a certain preference in style, then obviously go ahead with what you feel comfortable in. The best way to get this done right is to go through your wardrobe and start thinking about how you can tone things down and be more mindful with your wardrobe. Think about your lifestyle, the type of music you listen to, and the movies you watch and align your style with this.
