Ohio State’s Trey Sermon reenacts viral smirk from Clemson game

Ohio State running back Trey Sermon provided plenty of yards and touchdowns for the Buckeyes in 2020, but he also was responsible for one of the funniest and most memorable moment of the season outside the white lines. That came during the Buckeyes’ dominant win over Clemson in the College Football Playoff as Ohio State broke its drought against the Tigers in impressive fashion.

Sermon’s smirk into the camera on national TV went viral immediately as the Oklahoma transfer delighted in giving the Buckeyes a three-score lead. He went on to suffer an injury early on in Ohio State’s loss to Alabama in the national championship game, and he’s thus sitting out on-field action this week at the Senior Bowl.

But Sermon is still doing interviews, and he obliged when NFL Network’s Andrew Siciliano asked him to recreate the famous smirk — it comes at the end of the video below.

It’s not exactly the same, but a good effort nonetheless by Sermon. The former Ohio State star said he’s speaking with NFL personnel and observing practices this week, and he could be one of the top running backs taken in the 2021 NFL Draft in late April.

Sermon finished his one-year Ohio State career with 870 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 116 carries. It took a while for Sermon to find his rhythm after a strange offseason due to COVID-19, but once he did, he showed the ability that made him a target for the Scarlet and Gray coming out of high school. In the final three full games at Ohio State, Sermon rushed for 636 yards and all four of his touchdown, including a record-setting 331-yard, two-touchdown performance in the Big Ten Championship Game against Northwestern.
