Seaman boys down Topeka High 50-48

Close games have been a calling card for the Seaman boys this season, with three of their five games before Christmas going to overtime.

So naturally, 2021 began in somewhat similar fashion.

The Vikings didn’t experience another overtime game with visiting Topeka High, but came darn close. Seaman saw the Trojans erase nearly all of an 11-point lead in the final quarter and have a chance to tie after the Vikings turned it over with 15 seconds left.

But Ty Henry came up with a huge blocked shot of Naz Phillips’ layup attempt with 10 seconds left. Henry corralled the rebound, was fouled and made both free throws to restore a four-point lead before High got a layup just before the buzzer from Isiah Esquibel to end the game.

“High frustrated us with their junk defenses in the first three quarters,” Seaman coach Craig Cox said. “I was proud of our players for working through it and building a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter, but our poor decision-making in the last few minutes almost cost us the game.”

Seaman trailed 12-8 at the end of the first quarter and 23-20 at halftime before taking a 35-33 lead into the fourth quarter. Mateo Hyman, returning after missing three straight games, keyed Seaman’s second-half surge, scoring 16 of his team-high 18 points in the second half. He had nine in the fourth quarter as Seaman stretched its lead to 11, 44-33, with more than five minutes left.

But Esquibel led High’s comeback, scoring nine in the fourth quarter, as well. He finished with 23 points to lead all scorers and helped the Trojans stay in the game despite playing without leading scorer Jalen Smith.

Jayden Leesman added 13 for High, which fell to 0-4. Henry backed Hyman’s 18 points with 11 points as Seaman surpassed last year’s win total, moving to 3-3.

CAIR PARAVEL SPLITS

Down 35-31 to Olathe Heritage Christian to start the fourth quarter, Cair Paravel’s girls put together a big fourth quarter to storm back for a big 46-40 road win.

Jaley and Josie Barkley combined for 11 of the Lions’ 15 fourth-quarter points, with Jaley going 6 of 6 at the free-throw line. Jaley finished with 20 points, while Josie added 10 points.

The Lion boys also needed a late comeback, but despite scoring 25 points in the final quarter, they couldn’t pull it off and fell 83-75.

Cair Paravel scored 47 second-half points, but simply couldn’t make up ground on Heritage Christian, which scored 46 in the half. Heritage scored at least 20 points in each of the final three quarters.

Luke Fay hit seven 3-pointers for the Lions and led the way with 26 points, Zach Clark added 25 points and Noah Hastert had 13.
