We Do Shopping Right

These Singapore-made accessories transform everyday clothes into instant CNY fashion

In 2021, the Lunar New Year festivities will be markedly different from previous years. Thanks to the pandemic and social distancing SOPs, most dinners, parties, events, and communal get-togethers will be put on ice in what is looking to be a pretty subdued time of celebration.

Whether we know it or not, all this also inadvertently affects our mood and will to be festive. While some may find it effortless to keep up the Lunar New Year spirit, others may find it pointless to prepare for the season – what’s the point of decorating, buying new clothes, and stocking up on treats at all in 2021?

For those feeling this way, Singaporean advertising agency TBWASingapore has released a line of accessories that seemingly give lazy and unmotivated individuals a way to quickly snap into the mood for the Lunar New Year and then snap out just as quick.

They call it the “DIY CNY Accessory” range, and it basically consists of a selection of Oriental-style collars, pockets, and knots that can be easily attached to everyday wear, instantly transforming them into Lunar New Year-ready outfits.

The first item is the “slip-on Mandarin collar” which lets users swiftly transform almost any top into a season-appropriate outfit by layering it above or underneath. The collars come in two sizes – a 15-inch Medium size or a 17-inch Large size – and will also come in three different colors – brown, red, and blue – with each color sporting its own unique motif.

The collar, if so wished, can also be worn by pets to get them into the mood of things.

The range also includes a fuss-free pocket with Chinoiserie motifs that can magnetically attach to any item of clothing. Similar to the collar, the pocket comes in brown, red, or blue, with different motifs for each. Hypothetically speaking, it can turn even a plain t-shirt into something acceptable for wear during a reunion dinner.

Finally there are the “illusion knots” that come in a pair, with three aesthetic options to pick from. They attach magnetically to clothing items, giving them a chic but understated Lunar New Year vibe.

For those interested and living in Singapore (shipping options are only available for Singaporean addresses at the moment), one of each item will be randomly picked and sold together in a kit at the cost of US$21.6 (SGD28.88), and will come packed in a plastic jar that looks jut like the ones used to pack pineapple tarts or other LNY edible goodies.

For those not really feeling the Lunar New Year vibes in 2021, these accessories might just be perfect for getting into the mood and then literally snapping out of it once all the food is eaten and the photos are snapped (and all the red packets are collected). And better yet, they’re reusable and good to go just in case you’re feeling just as lazy next year.
