Environmental fashion pact: major brands are teaming up

Fashion Pact: Everything you need to know

Some context…

On the heels of the G7 summit in Biarritz, which took place from the August 24-26, 32 of the world’s leading fashion and textile brands are entering into a “Fashion Pact”. The CEO of Kering, François-Henri Pinault, stepped up to explain the pact’s goals and commitments, following a call to action by Emmanuel Macron in April 2019, who asked for the businessman’s help in bringing together leading fashion and textile world figures in order to focus on the industry’s impact on the environment.

Their commitments

While the fashion world is one of the most lucrative industries, it is also one of the highest-polluters. The Fashion Pact coalition (comprised of 32 major brands) is commiting to three concrete objectives within three domains essential to the planet’s protection: climate, biodiversity, and oceans.

1. “We will commit to implement Science-Based Targets (SBTs) on climate and drive corporate actions that are consistent with a 1.5-degree pathway through a ‘just transition’ to achieve net-zero by 2050.”

2. “We will commit to support the development of SBTs on biodiversity and the implementation of these targets within our sector to assure our contribution to the protection and restoration of

“The fashion sector will commit to significantly reducing the negative impacts that it has on the ocean environment, in collaboration with other existing leading initiatives.”

“Elimiate the usage of single-use plastics by 2030”

Each brand that has been pledged their commitment to the pact will be in charge of implementing their own strategies and objectives, while keeping in mind their actions must be accepted by the rest of the coalition’s members, and supported through intersectoral initiatives.
