How to Turn Your Garage Into a Man Cave

If you want some space to do what you want and do not really need a place for your car, you can turn your garage into your own man cave. This is much cheaper than building an extension on your home and will take less time. It is also a good way to get some extra space.

The Plan

The first step you need to take is to consider how extensive you want the conversion from garage to man cave will be. You have to consider when you are going to be using the space and how much time you are going to be spending there. If you are going to be dealing with both hot and cold weather, you need to do more to convert the space such as air conditioning and insulation. However, if you are going to be creating a simple man cave that you use mainly for socialising, you will be able to get by with less work.

This first step is very personalised because it is based on your needs. It is possible to get by with a very minimalist man cave if this is all that you need. However, if you want the area to feel like a home outside of the house, you need to put in a lot more work. If you are going to be using electronics or putting a pool table into the room, HVAC and insulation are a requirement that you need to take care of.

The Man Cave-ness

Your garage will not be a man cave without the right features. These features may be a bar area or a Babyfoot football table personal to you and your interest to make the space your own. You need to include things that will make it comfortable for you and somewhere that you will want to spend time.

The Walls

One of the steps that you have to take when making your man cave is to insulate the walls if the garage does not already have insulation. If you have a detached garage, this is very important because you will not benefit from the heating and cooling of the house that an attached garage would. If your garage is unfinished, you will be able to place the insulation between the studs of the wall and then close it up with some drywall. The drywall can then be painted any colour you want for your man cave.

However, if your garage is already finished and has drywall, it will often already have insulation. As you are hanging the drywall, you will need to make a note of where the studs are. This is important if you want to hang anything on the walls such as a flat-screen, signs or a basketball hoop.

The Floors

Most garages will have a concrete slab as their floor which can become quite cold in the winter. If you want to insulate the floors, you will need to put the insulation on the concrete and then install floorboards. If you already have floorboards, you could install a carpet.

There are many people who keep their concrete floors and then lay down large rugs to warm the room. While leaving the concrete floor might be tempting, you need to consider what you are going to be doing in the room. If you are going to spend time on your feet playing darts, you should get some form of forgiving and supportive flooring instead.

The Ceiling

If you have an unfinished ceiling, you may want to leave it. However, if you do not like the look of the rafters, you can finish the ceiling with some drywall and paint. Regardless of what you do with the ceiling, you will need to look at the lighting that you have installed.

Lighting fixtures will need to be installed if there is not sufficient lighting already. A ceiling fan should also be considered as it can help to circulate the area. This can be very helpful if you are not going to install an AC.

The Furniture

When it comes to furniture, you could bring something from the home to the garage or buy some new items. What you need to consider if having enough seating for everyone who visits. You should also consider getting a bar sized fridge to store food and drinks that you can offer your guests.
