NATICK — Police say a woman used a stolen suitcase to try to steal more than $1,200 of clothing on Tuesday afternoon from Macy’s.

Liza Chaudhary, 42, was arrested as she was leaving the Natick Mall store at 4:46 p.m., police spokeswoman Lt. Cara Rossi said on Wednesday.

Store security saw Chaudhary grab a $500 travel suitcase from the luggage aisle. She then brought it to the clothing department and filled it with clothing and then went to the checkout aisle, Rossi said.

“She purchased four items that she actually paid for, but then took the suitcase and attempted to leave the store without offering to pay,” the lieutenant said.

A store security officer stopped Chaudhary and found that the stolen suitcase contained more than $1,200 worth of clothing, including loungewear, sportswear, coats and other various men’s and women’s clothing.

The total amount of stolen goods, including the suitcase, was a little less than $1,800.

When questioned, Chaudhary said she was staying in Wayland, but planned on going back to India at the end of the month.

Police charged her with larceny of property worth more than $1,200.

Chaudhary was scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday in Natick District Court. Results were not available.
